A single-layer broad-angle negative-index metamaterial for the visible

Abstract
We propose a new design of metamaterials with negative index of refraction and high figure-of-merit in the visible spectral region. The material is composed of a single layer of coupled coaxial waveguides that consist of a thin dielectric ring surrounded by Ag. By studying both the individual and collective properties of the waveguides we find that the metamaterial response is highly tunable and only weakly dependent on the angle and polarization of incident light.
